As the railroad began to take root across Kansas in the 1860’s, the town of Frankfort formed along the line. Most of the earlier settlers were Irish, with some German families figuring into the mix. Father William Fitzgerald offered the first Mass in 1879. He later organized the Catholic community into a parish.
In 1880 the first church was built. The church lasted 20 years before an increasing population necessitated a new church. The second Annunciation church was dedicated on Thanksgiving, 1900. In just five short years the church went up in flames. On July 4, 1906, the third Annunciation church was dedicated.
Two years later, that church would be consumed by fire. Despite their bad luck, the parishioners persevered and built yet another church, which was dedicated on February 22, 1909. This church didn’t suffer the disastrous misfortune of its predecessors and received an extensive renovation in 1976 and again in 2000. Today the parish proudly serves the needs of 172 families.
